Entry for May 2, 2008 - New Device to Help Climb Stairs

Just found an article about this device called the Stair Steady on the Internet.  It is a simple attachment to a stair railing that allows the person to hold onto a horizontal bar while climbing the stairs.  To see a picture go to http://www.the-stairsteady.co.uk/pages/stairsteady_bsense_co_uk/Home.htm or Google Stair Steady Ltd.  This appears to be really innovative and simple.  It is just being developed but I could see this product being very beneficial for the geriatric population.  Depending upon the height of a stair railing at a school, I wonder if it would work for children?  This would be a simple fix for children with limited mobility.  Plus, it is inexpensive and is out of the way when not in use.  I can think of one young boy with spastic diplegia would would do great with this.  Can't wait to see this product in the States.  Again more info at  http://www.the-stairsteady.co.uk/pages/stairsteady_bsense_co_uk/Home.htm.

What is your opinion?  Like it for pediatric clients or see future problems?  Post your comments.

5/6/08: I have since heard back from the Stair Steady company. They do feel this device would work with children. They are currently forming partnerships with distributors in the US. The other huge bonus is the railing can be raised as the child grows in height. This is a modification that could be placed in a school that would last many years. We all know how school districts love a bargain! They will be displaying the Stair Steady in Atlanta on May 15th at the Georgia World Conference Center for the Intel Science and Engineering Fair.
