Book Review by Margaret Rice PT

I was so excited when I received this book to read it.  In my years of practice as a pediatric physical
therapist, I was never able to find a great book on gross motor skills and stretching in children with cerebral
palsy.  This book in an invaluable resource for therapists and parents.  The book is jam packed with
functional activities written with step by step directions.  The photographs that accompany the written text
help to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of the functional activity or exercise.  As therapists,
we know how important it is for carry over of therapeutic activities whether by a parent or classroom staff.
This book offers activities that you can incorporate into a child or students daily routine creating a motor skill
rich learning environment.

The book is comprised of 17 chapters.  Several chapters provide an overview of cerebral palsy, gross motor
skill development and the importance of flexibility.  The book then provides activities for all levels in the
developmental sequence such as head control, prone, sitting, kneeling, crawling, standing and walking.
There is a section on balance as well.  There are numerous helpful tips from parents of children with
cerebral palsy scattered throughout the book.  There is a great chapter on bracing, medical and surgical
management of cerebral palsy for the new pediatric therapist.

As a seasoned physical therapist, I found this book to be an excellent resource for pediatric therapists,
parents and teachers of children with cerebral palsy.

If you have any questions or comments about the book, I would love to hear from you at
comments.
