Neighborhood Playtime Success Story
|
Successful Child in this story: A 9 year old boy who was home-schooled with a
diagnosis of autism
Submitted by: Pediatric PT from New York State
Concerns or Problems: His mother desperately wanted her son to be able to play with
the neighborhood children to help with his social skills. He was unable to ride a bicycle
or play basketball.
Intervention(s): This boy received one on one physical therapy, 30 minutes per week,
at home for 6 weeks. During each therapy session, we practiced bike riding through the
neighborhood followed by basketball skills practice in the driveway.
Success Story: After the 6 weeks, the boy was able to ride the bicycle independently
for short distances on flat surfaces. In addition, he was able to dribble a basketball for
10 feet and shoot a basket 1/5 trials. His mother reported that the boy was now able to
join the neighborhood children on short bike rides independently and play basketball for
short periods of time!
