Looking for a freebie? These identifying coin worksheets are free to download to practice coin identification, fine motor skills and adding coins. Students need all the practice they can when it comes to coin identification and it helps with fine motor skills too! Some children love to pick up coins and simply put them in a piggy bank and dump them back out again. These two worksheets use a piggy bank and a pet store to add in some FUN to coin identification.

How to Use the Identifying Coin Worksheets

At the bottom of the post you can download and print the two pages and laminate them. Provide the student with some assorted coins or you can offer them exact change for the pet shop page:

  • 2 pennies
  • 3 nickels
  • 4 dimes
  • 3 quarters

For the piggy bank page, the students can sort the change and total it up in each bank. Use a wipe off marker if you laminated the worksheet.

For the pet shop page, the students can match the correct coins next to the pets.

Need to Make It Easier?

If you need to make the piggy bank activity easier, only provide the students with a few coins to sort and add up.

Want to Use it For Play Time?

For younger children, sometimes to easiest way to work on learning new skills is to make play time also learning time. Use the pet store page in a dramatic play area. Perhaps you have some stuffed animals you could have for sale and the students could match up the coins for what pet they want to purchase.

Want to Challenge Fine Motor Skills Even More?

Using these identifying coin worksheets challenge fine motor skills. When children pick up coins off the table, the small muscles in the fingers and hands need to work hard. If you want to work them even harder, challenge the children to hold several coins in their hands at once. Using only one hand can they manipulate the coins and bring the correct one to the tips of the thumb and index finger to put the coin on the worksheet.

Another extension activity would be to have a real piggy bank (or use any recycled plastic container and put a slit on the top). After the children put use the identifying coin worksheets, they can pick up the coins and put them into the piggy bank.
