The teacher begins by introducing the essay structure and provides a graphic organizer that outlines the main components, such as the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

During the initial stages of instruction, the teacher models the process of constructing an essay by thinking aloud and sharing their thoughts. This technique, known as “think alouds,” allows students to gain insight into the thought process behind essay writing. The teacher also gives students an opportunity to peer edit as they begin to form their essays collaboratively. As the students progress, they are gradually given more ownership and responsibility for their essays while still receiving guidance and feedback from the teacher and peers.

THE FOUR STAGES OF SCAFFOLD LEARNING

Scaffold learning involves four distinct stages, each aimed at gradually transferring responsibility from the teacher to the students. These stages ensure that students receive the necessary support to master new skills and concepts while gradually developing independence and self-regulation. The stages are as follows:

Stage 1: Directed Instruction

In this initial stage, the teacher provides explicit guidance and instruction to students. This may involve breaking down complex tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, using clear and concise language, and providing step-by-step demonstrations. Students gain a solid foundation and understanding of the topic by doing so.  Students begin to get comfortable with the task at hand.

Stage 2: Guided Practice

After receiving direct instruction, students engage in guided practice under the teacher’s supervision. During this stage, the teacher offers support and feedback, helping students apply the newly acquired knowledge or skills. For instance, the teacher may provide sentence starters or cues to assist students in structuring their essays effectively. This stage still gives the students a good amount of support in the task.

Stage 3: Collaborative Learning

The collaborative learning stage emphasizes peer interaction and engagement. Students work together in small groups or pairs to reinforce their understanding and apply the knowledge gained. This collaborative approach encourages active participation, fosters communication skills, and promotes a deeper level of comprehension.  Students begin to move away from the heavily teacher-structured way of progress.

Stage 4: Independent Performance

During the final stage, students are expected to demonstrate mastery of the new concept or skill independently. At this point, the scaffolding provided by the teacher is gradually removed, allowing students to take ownership of their learning. Teachers continue to monitor progress, provide feedback, and assess students’ understanding using rubrics or other evaluation tools.

USING SCAFFOLDING TO REACH A GOAL

Our students have academic goals, and educators have the job of helping students reach those goals.  When educators use scaffolding strategies effectively, students are much more likely to be successful.  First, clearly define student goals.  Once the goals are clear, you can think about ways to break the task down into manageable steps or chunks to work towards the goal. Make sure your lesson plans have explicit instructions when you begin your directed instructions and guided practice.  Assess student progress as you move to collaborative learning and independent performance.  By the time you make it through the independent performance, students should be close to reaching their goal all on their own!
