Kinesio Tape, Balance and Children

A recent study examined the effect of Kinesio Taping (KT) effect on balance and foot arches in young people with intellectual disability. The researchers studied 30 young people with intellectual disability and flat feet.

Methodology

The participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group. Each person had their balance and foot arches tested on a baroresistive platform before and after the study. Both groups completed a 12 week task-oriented training three times per week. The experimental group had kinesio tape applied to the sole of their feet.

Results of the Study on Kinesio Tape, Balance and Children

Following data analysis indicated the following:

  • enhanced balance was found in both groups.
  • when compared to the control group, the experimental group exhibited more balanced posture in the medio-lateral center of pressure displacement on eyes closed and in the anterior-posterior center of pressure displacement on eyes open tests.
  • higher foot arches were discovered in both groups.
  • two participants in the experimental group had the left foot arch change from flat to normal.

The researchers concluded that kinesio tape may be helpful to improve the sense of stability and creating proper foot structure in children with intellectual disability.
