Bilateral Spelling Coordination Activity – Free

WHAT SKILLS ARE STUDENTS WORKING ON WITH THE BILATERAL SPELLING?

This type of task helps strengthen:

• Cross-lateralization of the brain – the ability to coordinate movement between the left and right sides of the body, supporting communication between both hemispheres of the brain. This is important for reading, writing, and other complex motor skills.
• Bilateral coordination – the skill of using both hands together in a controlled way, such as tying shoes, cutting with scissors, or buttoning clothing.
• Visual motor integration – the ability to match visual information with motor output, like seeing letters and guiding the hands to trace or copy them accurately.
• Midline crossing skills – the ability to reach across the center of the body with arms or legs, which is essential for writing across a page, playing sports, and many everyday activities.

Try This:

• Have students use both hands at the same time to trace the paths while saying the letters aloud.
• For a simpler version, let students trace one side at a time.
• Add variety by having students use two different colors, one in each hand.
