When You Have a Sad Child
It is perfectly normal for children to have a range of emotions from sadness to pure happiness. When you have a sad child though who needs some extra support to regulate his or her emotions this emotional regulation activity may be helpful. It is important to remember to seek help from a physician regarding overwhelming feelings of sadness in children.
How to Help if a Child is Sad
If children are unable to regulate their emotions, encourage them to write or draw pictures that represent their feelings of sadness. There are no right or wrong answers.
After gathering their ideas, they can write a few reflection statements in full sentences about how the feel when they are sad. Remind the children again that there are no right or wrong answers.
Help the children come up with coping strategies to minimize the feelings of sadness if necessary. List the strategies on the third worksheet. The children can keep the list with them to help provide reminders of strategies to use.
