It can be hard for some students to write lower case letters with the correct proportion on the line. This video uses embodied cognition to teach them about where the letters go on the line using visuals and movement.

How Does the Sky Grass Dirt Handwriting Video Work?

At the bottom of this blog post, you will see the link to access the video showing the proper placement of lowercase letters of the alphabet.

It also includes a handout that you can print with a QR code on it. You can provide parents with the information to support letter writing at home.

The video starts out by teaching the children about what letters are formed in the SKY, GRASS, and DIRT.

The visual supports used to work on the printing of each letter breaks the entire alphabet up into three different types. There are three different names of each line.

SKY LETTERS

When letters are located in the top half of a dotted line, these are SKY letters represented by a bird.  The letters are b,d,f,h,k,l,t.

GRASS LETTERS

When letters are located in the bottom half of the dotted line, these are GRASS letters represented by a ladybug. The letters are a,c,e,i,m,n,o,r,s,u,v,w,x,z.

DIRT LETTERS

When letters are located under the line, these are DIRT letters represented by a worm. The letters are g,j,p,q,y.

For SKY letters the students will raise their arms overhead like a bird in the blue sky.

For GRASS letters the students will round their back like a ladybug in the green grass and touch their toes.

For DIRT letters the students will wiggle like a worm in the brown dirt.

On the video, the students will be shown and letter.  They have to decide whether the letter is a SKY – GRASS – DIRT letter by moving like a BIRD, LADYBUG or WORM.

The video will show the right answer after they have started moving.
