A recent study decided to take a closer look following neuroimaging techniques, to determine the effects of physical activity on brain structure and function in youth.
Study on the Impact of Physical Activity on Brain Structure and Function in Youth
A research review was completed that included studies where the impact of physical activity on brain structure and function in children and adolescents were studied. Nine studies were investigated that used neuroimaging techniques.
The researchers determined the following regarding physical exercise for brain development in youth:
- effects were reported for 12 regions on the brain including frontal lobe, parietal lobe, anterior cingulate cortex, hippocampus, and several white matter tracts and functional networks.
The researchers concluded that there is evidence from randomized controlled trials that participation in physical activity may modify white matter integrity and activation of regions key to cognitive processes in youth. They recommended additional larger studies to replicate findings.
