What are the Emotions?

There are three different colors of emotions to describe different levels of alertness. They can help children understand how they are feeling and to choose strategies to help them cope based on the colors. The goal is for children to learn strategies to help them recognize emotions and use strategies to cope with those emotions. The emotional regulation free printables can act as a visual support to demonstrate the different colored emotions.

GREEN EMOTIONS

The GREEN emotions are the ideal zone for learning. When children are in the green emotions, they may express that they feel calm, happy, focused, ready to learn or content.

YELLOW EMOTIONS

The YELLOW emotions represent a heightened or low level of alertness. Just like the yellow of a traffic light indicates to slow down, the yellow emotions should have us slow down and take a minute to think. These emotions may include feelings of anxiety, excitement, silliness, frustrations or stress for heightened levels. Feeling sad, bored, tired, sick, or disappointed are examples of low levels of alertness.

RED EMOTIONS

The RED emotions represent an extremely heightened level of alertness. Feeling mad, upset/loud, scared, angry, or out of control are examples of red emotions.

How to Use the Emotional Regulation Free Printables

At the bottom of the post you can download your emotional regulation free printables. Print the full color or black and white version. You can review with the children the different colored emotions using the pictures as visual supports.

Ask children to color the black and white version using green, yellow, and red crayons to mark the different emotions.

These visual supports can be used throughout the day for students to help them recognize what emotion color they are in at any given moment. Discuss individualized strategies they can use to get to the green zone so the students are ready to learn.
